I agree. We’re not really standing on opposing points here. Women being forced to imitate men (which they have been through economic necessity, which becomes obvious when current dynamics are viewed through a game theory lens) is a very bad thing, because quite simply women are not men. But that this corporatist’s dream has been allowed to play out for the last half century does not mean that we don’t stand to benefit hugely from women pursuing professional and academic goals. Women always worked in the fields alongside their menfolk, go to any third world country today and you will see women performing the back breaking labour white women endured when we were serfs. With the industrial revolution came a period where work changed, and thanks to the massively increased incomes for labour, but also the increased personal danger to labour, that we sought to protect women and children as much as we could. That danger to labour has now significantly decreased so we should again be looking to what benefits women can bring (but not children anymore thankfully). As long as we can resist the corporatists and recognise that men and women differ, and differ significantly, we can all benefit from women’s professional and academic contributions without having to ensure the associated familial sacrifices we have had to for the past 50 years (of which I could be considered a “victim”)

That’s a completely different argument though. The real contributors to excess labour in the past half century has been the opening up of India and China. That’s a workforce of over a billion added, and all cheap labour.

However, the “doubling” locally of the workforce is a huge problem, you’re right (I won’t delete the above paragraph cos that was my first reaction to your point). Women are now forced to work in the west even when they have kids cos of the effect of some women working when they have kids. It’s the prisoners dilemma basically - to have a decent house now you both have to have decent jobs. I think this question is the most important question we have to answer in our age. We shouldn’t forbid women from working, we shouldn’t force to women to work, but how do we do neither?
