Not in the early 80s, and I doubt even today except on maybe skyscraper elevators.
Also, most if not all elevators have a "Close Door" button. Next time you get on an elevator, immediately click it. It won't do anything. It is a psychological button.
The door will still close faster if you mash the hell out of the close button though. Someone mentioned you could hold a floor on most elevators to cancel it but I haven't gotten it to work.
That's the trick. The more you mash the "Close Door" button, the better it works.
I'll let you figure out why that is true.

There is some override feature I've heard about. I'm not an elevator expert, but meh, I believe you can override all the floors on some elevators.
