Imagine thinking adding a smaller number to a larger one makes a larger average number.
Wut? Surely it would unless the smaller number is 0 or a negative.
larger average number is the operative fragment here. (i.e. average of a and b where a does not equal b is (a+b)/2, more generally the average taken of a set of values will always be less than the sum of that same set)
Oh, sorry I see what you mean. I thought you meant adding them together, like summing them.
Imagine how high IQ's would be or how tall people would be if that were the case.
He said "larger average number," meaning that if you don't deliberately make one of the two numbers small, the average total is higher than if you do.
Yeah, I get what he means now. I was thrown up where he said "adding," like I thought he was adding them together then averaging with the original or something.
Could be some traditional-english vs. simplified-english thing.
