Religion IS for women. Its a social mechanism to prevent both sexes from being promiscuous, yes, but it is more important towards controlling female promiscuity. Women will all flock to the most attractive men, and let ugly men (literally and figuratively) starve without them even caring - if religion did not exist to create enough social shame and fear to prevent them from doing so. It teaches morality or at least moral behavior. Fear of hell, love of heaven - all of these things primarily exist to control female behavior, and then secondly, to also keep attractive men (who could have as many women as they want) in line, and not fuck around. If there was no fear of hell or love of heaven in society, then the only thing left in its place to control people, is fear of death, which would have to be "made known" from time to time (bloodshed). And that makes life unpleasant.... So religion is a useful lie that can also prevent the need for violence. Control of people = a better society. Now, intelligent people may or may not buy into the religion (actually believe in it), but they are usually unable to ignore the purpose that it serves... Personally, I'm not able to ignore the fact that Religion may be necessary to control people, and prevent immoral behavior. Like the myth of Santa Claus, for example, which serves as the lesson of teaching children about the existence of lies - once they figure out. Myths are like a multi-tiered "rite of passage" - the smarter ones progress through further stages then the less intelligent, and are able to see through more of the myths that society tells then others, while the less intelligence do not get as far, and simply believe, but end up behaving in a more moral way.
