you could say the same about a lot of "phobias". Anarchnophobia comes to mind. There is absolutely nothing phobic about your brain being scared of a small creature which may or may not be poisonous and kill you in under 10 minutes
Islamophobia doesn't exist. There's nothing irrational about being wary of a medieval death-cult that is 100% okay with torturing nonbelievers to death and thinks fucking livestock is a good time.
No, but the fear needs to be irrational to be regarded as a phobia. Being black widow-phobic wouldn’t make sense, because fear of black widows is entirely rational. But arachnophobia implies an irrational fear of all spiders, and getting panicked by a daddy long legs isn’t really that rational. However, apparently fear of spiders is innate in humans because they don’t appear to be at all threatening but obviously very much are so there’s a theory that we are born with an instinctive fear of them as an evolutionary development.
How is that not a phobia?
It's not a phobia in that its not irrational. Its completely normal to be scared or phobic of an item which has the unknown potential to kill you. Same with snakes, and small critters, who are known to carry disease
I think the analogy would be the attitude towards a daddy long legs. I know they are not going to harm me. I find their visage distasteful and I don't want to look at them so I try to get rid of them
Next time, if you're not quite certain of a definition, do a quick google search before making a comment.
You guys are not saying the same thing. In the case of homophobia, you’re saying the fear is rational, he’s saying that the fear doesn’t exist
