We had remotes in the mid 80’s at our house, I remember going to my grandparents farm when I was a kid in the 80s and bitching about having to get up and physically turn the knob and having my grandfather give me the “we walked to school barefoot in the snow uphill both ways” lecture...
The very first ones I saw were clear plastic strings with a remote on the end. Looked like monofilament. Yes, that's right...stringing fishing line across the living room just so your fat ass didn't have to get up to change the 3 VHF and 6 UHF channels. None of which came in all that well anyway.
Weird.
I think the VCR my folks had might have had a pneumatic remote. It only paused and unpaused, and it looked like a little hose, and the button had a bunch of travel and was all squishy. Idunno, not like I was allowed to take it apart and find out, that thing cost thousands, and in 70s dollars!
My grandparents had one of those I think. It stayed attached to the VCR yeah?
Holy crap. Now that's amazing. I never saw anything like that!
Were they the ones that struck the little chime bar to change the channel and volume only, or did you have one of the early full-function remotes?
My Mom's neighbor had an authentic Zenith Space command. I wanted to buy it, but I was poor at the time. She died. No idea what happened to it.
