From what I read, it seems like this custom varies from heeb to heeb. The jews that are less radical slaughter the chicken (kosherly) and give it to the poor. I guess that's their one good deed for the year, the day before Yom Kippur.

i believe gods / goddesses love their creations - especially animals and nature. i don't understand why some people think gods / goddesses want them to torture and sacrifice animals. the only "god" who would do that is antichrist.
