You bet they can. Curl it right off your head. I used to work for an outpost of a larger corporate entity, in a location that repaired certain control boards for kitchen devices. We had these desoldering tools, basically a soldering gun with a hole in the tip that you could pull a vacuum through, and remove solder. My boss, (who good-naturedly called everyone around him a wingnut,) left one day very suddenly. He came back with a haircut that would make a new recruit in the military go "wow dude, where's your hair?" Turns out, he leaned over his workbench and accidentally got too close to the business end of the desoldering gun, and burnt a big hole in his hair. Fun times ensued, and he was the wingnut for a while after that.
