She's even soldering on the wrong side of the board

[–] 2 pts (edited )

Depends, you can solder on both sides of a 2+ layer board. Some have this fear of soldering on anything but the bottom, but there are exposed leads on both sides. I regularly solder both sides, especially when there's a large copper area that needs extra heat - sometimes two irons are used, but that's dangerous and can destroy your board easily and I wouldn't suggest it unless You Know What You Are Doing Thank You Very Much.

That's not a board you'd use that kind of iron on, however. That looks like one of those old ratshack style irons with the thread-in tip. Those are fine for old radios, but I'd never bring one of those near any modern board, especially with a tip that is the equivalent of trying to put a decorative rock in your garden and ordering a mountain's worth of rock for the job.

TBH, you'd not be repairing that board anyway. Motherboards are commodity devices, and unless it's a case of infant mortality, the board would be discarded when it's life was over.

TL;DR, she loses on all counts.

She should understand you don't touch the metal part of an iron. Come on girl, those laundry and hair curling skills are somewhat applicable here!

soldering irons appear to get 1.5x - 2x hotter than curling irons though.

They can curl hair x2 as fast then right?

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

she'd probably put it in her hair backwards so I don't think that works.

probably why her hair is curly still to.

she uses the plastic part and doesn't plug it in.

You bet they can. Curl it right off your head.

I used to work for an outpost of a larger corporate entity, in a location that repaired certain control boards for kitchen devices. We had these desoldering tools, basically a soldering gun with a hole in the tip that you could pull a vacuum through, and remove solder.

My boss, (who good-naturedly called everyone around him a wingnut,) left one day very suddenly. He came back with a haircut that would make a new recruit in the military go "wow dude, where's your hair?" Turns out, he leaned over his workbench and accidentally got too close to the business end of the desoldering gun, and burnt a big hole in his hair. Fun times ensued, and he was the wingnut for a while after that.

I don’t know how well that is working out for them.

Folks who've been doing solder work for 20 years still can't quite get it 100%..

I'm literally right now dealing with the fact that "experienced solderers" are not keeping their tips in good shape, making bad joints, and causing warranty returns. I'm supposed to be making this big write-up and training on this soldering-101 type of shit.

Something I've warned these guys about since I started there (shut up, new guy). Now they're gonna HAVE to follow my instructions, it's official.

Sucks when I have spend my time on this kind of stuff

The cringey ones are those who blow on the solder joints to cool them down. Little do they know that it will end up corroding them.

Pretty much like blowing in videogame cartridges when they are glitchy.

Haha, that is pretty cringey! Haven't had that one, yet.

Anyone else feel that burn when they saw this? Brought me straight back to 12 years old when I first burned myself with a soldering iron. I was pretty stupid for 12, so that shows her level of intellect.

For those of you laughing about how dumb this "STEM girl" is, consider the following.

My company needed some recently graduated EEs. They wanted to hire a bunch of them cheap, got them right out of school, etc.

Once they passed the weeding out and the interviews, they were sent to our corporate HQ in Florida for testing and training.

Some of these guys had never held a volt meter. Didn't know what to do with it or how to use it.

These are guys with a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering.

That's quality education right there.

I joke with my workmate, he has a Masters in robotics, heads up the Engineering team and can't do an oil change on his car.

talking to someone else that wanted to know and besides the fact...

why would I be scared of a curling iron even or speaking of that?

could be useful for certain things.

as long as you don't stick any of the metal in a metal cup (in the liquid or get it wet) and create a safe extension you could probably make a warm cup of coffee with one easily.

use a curling iron to heat up coffee to 120F-150F degrees just fine if it gets up to 200F-300F degrees.

no reason to be afraid of them might save my ass one day if I needed a warm cup of coffee in some situation where all I have is a curling iron and a wall outlet. as long as it doesn't touch the liquor and only the metal cup with my own modified extension.

I do not recommend this at home and this is just some fictional situation. curling iron might be useful in some situation where heat goes out alone or something like that.

that's just a start to.

that's not my story this one below.

someone else told me this story. tampons (pads - new out of package obviously) are great for absorbing blood alone if you get cut and need something to stop the bleeding (forget the word) - block the bleeding, but don't have a shirt and/or towel that's easily accessible right away.

If it smells like bacon, you're holding it wrong, lady...

I think you may be confusing me with you
