Dogs are great, but I kind of feel guilty if I don't have the time to spend with them. Cats, not so much. If you live in the city, are at work all day, and are barely at home, cats are the way to go. If you're on a farm, or have a shop pet that lives in the workplace, greets customers, etc. dogs can't be beat. Also, young kids. Dogs are great for young children because they both want to play all the time.
