It's an idiosyncracy of multi-round voting systems. With first past the post like the yankees have, you end up with two marginally distinguishable parties trying to garner 51% of the vote.

With multi-round systems you see in many European countries, you end up with minor groups acquiring outsized influence if they're willing to change sides as a spoiler.

Multi round voting compels people to light cars on fire?

Ironically, yes. It draws attention to that minor party and demonstrates the ability to mobilize active voters.

You cant sell 51% of the population on burning down cars. You can sell 5% of the population on that, and then horse-trade with the political incumbents that your 5% party of fanatics will form a coalition government with them in the next election.

Burning cars could be a fun addition to American politics, but alas not great for my car insurance rates.
