In a study for Fondapol, Lorenzo Vidino analyzes the link between Wokism and Islamism. The Islamists use the fight against discrimination to become the privileged interlocutors of Western institutions, he explains.

Lorenzo VIDINO. – “Despite their significant ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups, most of these young activists rarely use Islamist references, and, if they do, they do so in hushed terms. Rather, they speak the language of discrimination, anti-racism, internalized oppression, intersectionality, and postcolonial theory. Many of the causes they embrace, such as the environment or lowering college fees, have nothing to do with Islamism. Others can be seen as overlapping traditional grievances of Islamism but are framed in typically progressive terms and without apparent Islamism. For example, the recent embrace by Western Islamists of calls for the “decolonization” of school curricula matches the inherent anti-colonial nature of this Islamist ideology, but is framed in language commonly used in so-called progressive left-wing circles. Their goals are now adapted to their environment in most predominantly non-Muslim societies. The first objective of the Islamists is to spread their social, political and religious vision of the world to the Muslim communities and to do this, they have created an extremely sophisticated network of mosques, associations, schools and other institutions. (…)
The second objective is to become the exclusive interlocutor of the European elites, the moderate and reliable representatives to whom European governments, the media and civil society as a whole would reach out when they seek to mobilize the Muslim community. (…) This position would allow them de facto to be the official voice of Muslims in public debates and in the media, thus eclipsing competing forces. (…)
The tendency to target whiteness (“whiteness”) and the supposed dominating tendency of the white man and his alleged responsibility for most of the misfortunes of the world are, for example, perfectly suited to an ideology like Islamism, born in the first half of the 20th century in opposition to colonialism and which has since blamed the West for many of the problems of the Muslim world. Today's Islamists claim in perfect woke language and assert that Muslims need "safe spaces" to be protected from "structural racism" and to preserve their identity. (…)
