Lifeline was founded in October 2015 by Axel Steier, a resident of Dresden, in the former GDR, 42 years old, sometimes presented as an "ambulance driver", sometimes as a "sociologist", and Sascha Peitsch, a 28 year old carpenter. Their first action was a convoy of three vans for Greece. Settled on the island of Chios, their main job was to distribute blankets and cups of tea to the newly arrived migrants.
