I saw Kroger's selling 4 individual potatoes for $4. Used to be you could get a 20 lb bag for that much. Good luck even finding a 20 lb bag anymore. Even the ones in a 10 lb bag are small and not great quality. Are fast food places buying up all the good, cheap potatoes or what?

Find those places selling "imperfect" vegetables

Asian or Mexican grocers are pretty good for this. A lot of Americans will only buy "pretty" looking fruit/veg and you pay a LOT for that in the end. If you can't grow your own then this is the way to go. Probably less than half the cost of the typical "American" grocery store.

We've grown potatoes in a few different ways - in leftover chicken food bags as containers, in buckets, and on the ground in hay/straw. In my experience, it's not too difficult to get a pretty decent yield. I think next year we're going to try sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are super easy, just leave them on the counter till they sprout, snap off some of the sprouts and stick the sprouts in the soil. They take all season to grow and then you have to harvest and leave them in a cool dark place for a few weeks to let the starch even out or something. But the will grow like the are fucking invasive amazing yields too. I had some in a raised container, the vine got out and now have some growing along side of my house.

I tried growing some in a big planter before but it was kind of paltry. I also grew them in the ground but I think I dug them up too early, and all I got were new potatoes.

Have you seen the price of butter lately? 🤦🏼‍♀️

I don't usually use butter because I have a huge jug of virgin organic coconut oil that I've been using the past few years. But I know the price of milk has doubled since 2020.

We are lucky enough to have a (small) local dairy farm that produces milk/butter and a few other products that are far better and cheaper than what you get in the store. If you live in a area with one.. it would be worth finding out if they will direct-sell (some states have laws against it but there are always loopholes).
