on the road again trying to find something to eat so here’s another rant about northeast kingdom cuisine. this is a standard Maine sub sandwich. its a fuckin hot dog bun with low-grade deli meat and bullshit laid across the top. if you go to Amatos, or a mom n pop shop like Lloyds in Orono, this is what you get. if you are misfortunate enough that this is your only option, avoid eating in your vehicle unless you like sandwich pieces to fall between the seats. I am convinced these horrible sandwiches are what give used cars in Maine their distinctive odor, from years of deli meat, cheese and pickles between the seats.

D'Angelo's in Portland (St.John Street) or Western Ave S. Portland has a decent #9 steak sub ... used to be a favorite when I worked in the area uears ago. Excellent bread. I don't think they put as much steak in them as they did years ago but are still delicious. Plenty of other delicious sandwiches there too.

The best roast beef sub I've found was at Jordan's store on Rt 114 in Sebago Maine. They use 1/2lb fresh sliced delicious MMM brand rare roast beef, real cheese, whatever else you want in it. Price around $8.50 With tax.

I like the Amato's Italians a lot in the hot summer. I've eaten them for 50+ years. I get them with ligh pickle, S & P, no oil. They use a flavorful, high quality ham and cheese unlike many mom and pop stores. The sub bread is fantastic when fresh. Price about $8 with tax.

Any place offering lobster rolls might be good. Roughly $20 a sub, and that looks more like a hotdog roll. Some places will offer hot butter instead of mayo if you aren't into mayo.

What I have found is the further you go up the coast or deeper inland the worse the bread and sandwiches seem to get.

I tried Jersey Mike's steak sandwich when they opened here. I found them okay, nothing to brag about. I wasn't thrilled with the salty peppers in it. It was about 50% more expensive than other steak subs in the area. IIRC, it was priced at about $15 with tax but I think it included chips.

The best hamburgers are at DQ, their 1/2lb before cooking #6 triple burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle slices, mayo, 2 types of cheese in a bun is $6.40 with tax after senior discount (60 or over). Unbeatable quality and price.

I'm not as up to speed on the best sandwiches around the S Portland area anymore, I retired 19 years ago from what is now Texas Instruments. If you like Chinese Food, try Imperial China or Chia Sen near the S. Portland Mall. I've eaten at both hundreds of times, I try to hit them when I'm in the area.
