on the road again trying to find something to eat so here’s another rant about northeast kingdom cuisine. this is a standard Maine sub sandwich. its a fuckin hot dog bun with low-grade deli meat and bullshit laid across the top. if you go to Amatos, or a mom n pop shop like Lloyds in Orono, this is what you get. if you are misfortunate enough that this is your only option, avoid eating in your vehicle unless you like sandwich pieces to fall between the seats. I am convinced these horrible sandwiches are what give used cars in Maine their distinctive odor, from years of deli meat, cheese and pickles between the seats.

I think some of these "regional specialties" come into being because the chef is a lazy, arrogant retard.

OK but pepperoni rolls.

Pepperoni rolls are amazing. I always make sure to get some from the gas station when I visit my parents.

Looks about as appetizing as an uncooked pizza.

Looks like a really shitty hoagie.

I live here and I've never seen a sub that looked like that. Yuk!

The Amato's Italian Sandwich (pic8.co) is about the most popular "local" sub cousine in the lower half of Maine, but not everyone loves them.

dude, they are all over the place. just down the road from lloyds here is “legacy sandwich shop” and they make them the same way - Maine open face style on an oversized hot dog roll. its fuckin bizarre. i’ve had the same problem at bow street market freeport, cameron’s in new limerick, anania’s in portland. portland is supposed to have an italian community there, so i ask this italian guy i work with where the best sub in portland is, and he says “the quality shop.” so i give it a try and wouldn’t you know, same fucking thing at the quality shop. you can’t even trust the italians in maine with sandwiches. we are sandwich retarded.

do you have a recommendation?

Are you complaining about italian sub rolls or the guts they put in them or both?

Recommendations? What type of sandwich do you like elsewhere?

those aint italian sub rolls. they are hot dog buns. and the guts are low-tier deli meat and thick-cut vegetables destined to slip off the slimy deli meat and onto your lap.

right now, i am thankful jersey mikes has been popping up here. ramona’s makes a good sub on washington street in portland, but its a $20 sandwich.

what is your favorite sub in maine? i am on the road often from kittery to houlton.
