I'm reminded of a story about how they did a sanitation push in China after the communist takeover, discovered high levels of maggots infesting their rice, and built modern silos to store the rice and keep it dry, and kill off the maggots; and how afterwards they had a huge surge in malnutrition because the people who were only eating "rice" were now missing their sole source of protein.

Same reason they're pushing corn syrup over sugar and vegetable oils over animal fats. It's cheaper.

Sometimes it is cheaper. Other times it is porkbarrel. Ethanol in gasoline was pushed through by Tom Daschle, former senator from South Dakota while he was Senate Majority Leader. He also pushed through anti-sugar, pro corn syrup regulations. And what does South Dakota produce? Corn. Lots and lots of corn.
Once that was done Daschle left the senate and is now a lobbyist. He is making even more money while avoiding public scrutiny.
