I have ate copious amounts of both morels and false morels and have not gotten sick, nor have I ever known anyone to get sick from eating them. If they were served false morels then maybe that's what made them sick. But if you remove the stem of a false morel, they should be fine to eat. In my opinion false morels taste slightly better.
I'm not a mushroom guy myself ... but thought it was an interesting story, being a gourmet Michlin star restaurant and all. You can never tell anymore though, so many people are just out looking for a law suit.
I agree that it is an interesting story. I just wonder if it was improper cooking of the mushrooms, misidentified mushrooms, or some other food born illness.
Like I said, I have grown up eating these mushrooms and I have not once heard of someone getting sick from eating them. I suspect it was something else in the food. But you never know, maybe the chef was fucking retarded and didn't cook the mushrooms.
Probably closer to the truth.
