I see no reason why that would cause a concussive explosion.
Microwaves have big ass capacitors in them that hold power for a very long time even after being unplugged. I'm not an electrician or a chemist but it wouldn't surprise me if they went boom when microwaved.
I always ask for the microwaves folks toss and harvest those plus the magnetron and diode. Got a bunch of flyback transformers out yonder, gonna build me a death ray in my garage.
They probably failed to mention in the headline the gasoline in the microwave.
I'd guess ambient humidity in the Florida air rapidly turned into steam?
