The DeLand Police department said the male victim experienced a hard landing as a result of the malfunctioning parachute.

The number of things that have to go wrong in order for this to happen is high. Someone is going to jail for negligence.

It's a hell of a lot of fun. Freefall, especially.

Why would this guy not pack an extra, and what do you think went wrong (with the malfunction)?

Lot's of experienced jumpers don't pack a reserve. I'm not sure what happened in this particular case. It's still under investigation.
