LOL:

The DeLand Police department said the male victim experienced a hard landing as a result of the malfunctioning parachute.

The number of things that have to go wrong in order for this to happen is high. Someone is going to jail for negligence.

>a hard landing

It's not the fall that gets ya, it's the sudden stop at the end!

And yet another reason I would never and will never exit the aircraft without a reserve (and another reason every jumper should be inspecting/packing their own chute)

Yep. They made that joke every time I jumped. :-)

It's a simple thing to pack a reserve. Why not do it? Even if you don't pack your own chute, why not at least watch the person who does?

You've jumped? Are you insane?

Why would this guy not pack an extra, and what do you think went wrong (with the malfunction)?

It's a hell of a lot of fun. Freefall, especially.

Lot's of experienced jumpers don't pack a reserve. I'm not sure what happened in this particular case. It's still under investigation.

Dang, ain't there better hobbies?

There's no rush like jumpin'

Parachutin' give you such a thrill,

But stupid stunts they don't pay my bills,

I need money, that's what I want, gimme (etc.)

No man, it's dangerous, I even gave up scuba diving you feel me?

I did it once. Can confirm its a rush.

No video?

No meaty thud or juicy splat?

Why do I click?

It's not the initial impact, it's the bounce that kills you.

That’s my nightmare. Final horrifying moments of life is the ground rushing up to meet you at 300 feet per second.

It's unlikely to be negligence so much as the jumper freezing. If your primary chute fails to deploy, you have ~18 seconds to pull your reserve for a smooth landing. If you dont pack a reserve or do literally nothing for 18 seconds...you FAFO.

He was obviously falling to slow for his AAD to trigger... that could had saved him or make things even worse had the reserve got wrapped up in the chute.

On my first jump a guy in the flight before us had a malfunction. It made our jump unpleasant to say the least.

Have things changed? When I was a jumper one had to have a reserve chute and it had to be repacked by a licensed parachuter rigger, at regular intervals. I had a major malfunction once and was very glad to have my reserve chute. When someone died, we said they bounced. Because that's what happens when a human body hits the ground at 120 mph...

I don't know if things have changed or if something went horribly wrong at this one site. I like the term bounced, although I don't remember hearing it used where I used to jump.

I did it for a few years, had 28 jumps, never heard that term either. Cultures are different with each landingzone though.

No one is going to jail, a malfunction could be any number of things that happen when the chute deploys. More than likely he had a bubble that he thought he could work through and instead of going to his reserve. It happened to my instructor, put him, in the hospital for a few months.
