Any workout gurus want to help a relative newb?

What is the consensus on various supplements and pre/post workout shit?

Occasionally I'll have a Gatorade or protein shake after a workout but that's about it. I'm honestly clueless about pre workout stuff. I've always avoided it because I workout in the evening and my food cutoff is 5 pm so I don't want any calories after that. Do they work? WTF are they? Should I start using them?

Supplements are something else I'm wondering about. I take zinc and magnesium nightly to help with sleep and hopefully increase testosterone. Does it work? I have no idea. Somedays maybe, most of the time - I'm not so sure. Does anyone recommend anything that would enhance testosterone or have any other benefits? I've even seen estrogen blockers. Would that be a good idea?

EDIT: I also take vitamin C, D, K, beet root daily.

Or am I over thinking this and just need to work out harder/longer?

I had a vitamin D test last year showing that I was low. And that even with my doing 2000 iu a day.

ok. 2000 IU is too much for me I take about 1500 IU per day. Seems like it's very different for different people so that's why blood tests are so important but you already knew that.

I'd like to have a full vitamin panel done but my shit ass insurance requires some kind of diagnosis for each and every blood test.

Used to be the same in Sweden kinda and that sucked, but nowadays I can pay about $150 to get a whole slew of blood values including testosterone.
