Any workout gurus want to help a relative newb?

What is the consensus on various supplements and pre/post workout shit?

Occasionally I'll have a Gatorade or protein shake after a workout but that's about it. I'm honestly clueless about pre workout stuff. I've always avoided it because I workout in the evening and my food cutoff is 5 pm so I don't want any calories after that. Do they work? WTF are they? Should I start using them?

Supplements are something else I'm wondering about. I take zinc and magnesium nightly to help with sleep and hopefully increase testosterone. Does it work? I have no idea. Somedays maybe, most of the time - I'm not so sure. Does anyone recommend anything that would enhance testosterone or have any other benefits? I've even seen estrogen blockers. Would that be a good idea?

EDIT: I also take vitamin C, D, K, beet root daily.

Or am I over thinking this and just need to work out harder/longer?

I'm not good at this subject and I am definitely not a guru but I write a response anyway :p

Only thing I can think of is more vitamin D if you blood level of vitamin D is low. I had that problem and vitamin D supplement definitely helped, I got a bit higher vit D and testosterone in blood tests and got stronger after that. Don't guess, take a blood test, too high vitamin D is said to lead to calcification of blood vessels.

Might be obvious but: Keep a notebook where you write all results and what supplements you're on then you see what supplements and exercises work.

I'm a huge proponent of vitamin D. Changed my life energy wise.

I had a vitamin D test last year showing that I was low. And that even with my doing 2000 iu a day. I've since upped that to 5000 iu a day and am planning on another blood test in a few weeks to check my levels.

I'd like to have a full vitamin panel done but my shit ass insurance requires some kind of diagnosis for each and every blood test.

ok. 2000 IU is too much for me I take about 1500 IU per day. Seems like it's very different for different people so that's why blood tests are so important but you already knew that.

Used to be the same in Sweden kinda and that sucked, but nowadays I can pay about $150 to get a whole slew of blood values including testosterone.
