I think this represents a change of women now leaving the security of being a protected, defended "weaker sex" image/attitude. Most men don't actively think about the list on the right. We've been doing most of that our whole lives because we assumed the role of protectors of wives and daughters. Now that women want the "freedom" of being in charge of their roles in western society, they have come to realise there is a responsibility for their own safety that had been addressed by their male counterparts. Add in the fact that the world has not only become a little more depraved, but we are aware of how dangerous the world has always been, but unmentioned.

The problem is that the western world is actually safer than ever before. The news is all doom and gloom, but the truth is that violent crimes, across the board, are lower than any point in history.

But MSM would have us believe that rape/murder/terrorism exists around every corner.

You are right we are statistically safer now, but the perception, aided by societal messages, plus the evolutionary impetus, are still real. This response involves more than prescient, critical thinking and involves innate emotions.
