I think that was her original reason but it moved on to be something else. It doesn't save her any money to buy more typically girl clothes for her boy which she stated that she was starting to do. Also there are lots of ways to save money without dressing your girl like a boy, she could sell his old clothes and use that money to buy her clothes, she could find someone to swap the boy clothes for girl clothes, or she can just buy gently used girl clothes.
