I think my chickens and guineas take care of most of the mites.
wtf. no.
please do research. varroa mites are the most common pest affecting honeybees. if you have honeybees, you have varroa mites too. it's just a matter of controlling their numbers with testing and treating if necessary, but if you just don't do anything you won't have bees for very long.
Thanks for the warning.
just to clarify the most common threatening pest affecting honey bees.
obviously there's wax moths and hive beetles but those are very minor and only really come into play if your hive dies out.
varroa, however, is basically the most devastating thing that is afflicting honey bees right now. the pesticides / fungicides are bad, but varroa is a MASSIVE issue that is killing more hives than anything else.
That's what we hoped, too <sigh>
Our hive was in our chicken run, and looked real healthy on the run in to winter... The only thing that was different to them being very healthy in the summer was the addition of a syrup feeder we bought to help them over the winter.
Thanks for sharing. Sorry you lost your bees.
Thanks man - we did manage to get a kilo of honey out of the hive before winter - we had to remove a frame to fit the feeder, and it was a shame for it to go to waste.
Best honey I've tasted in years.
