Italian? Why not use native instead of importing a bunch of H1Bees.

there are no north american honey bees. they all come from europe. italians are the most docile while being some of the most productive, too.

[–] -1 pt

you mean LEAST productive.

I have an 8-hive apiary myself (plus nuc splits that I sell off). Italians are great starter bees, but if you go natural and don't re-queen with known Italians you'll end up with hybrids anyway. The more aggressive the hive, the faster the production. This is actually the Benefit to "Africanized" bees.

Fun hobby, time consuming as hell for the first few years, and NOT cheap to get into. I figure a 5~6 year ROI while keeping all I want and only selling off the excess.

Honey bees are also some of the worst pollinators. Can't do things like Squash because the squash blossoms open and close before honey bees even get out of the hive for the day. The solitary bees that have evolved into specialists are 10x more effective... they are also the bees that are actually in danger (honey bees are exploding, you want to "save the bees", you don't want honey bees).

Anyway, best of luck with yours. Be wary the small hive beetles (swiffer-pads trap them well), mites (few options here) and wax moths. Maybe you're somewhere with a real winter and won't have to worry about these as much as I do in the hot and humid south.

Honey bees live in symbiosis with humans.

This makes them incredibly valuable despite what the anti human sociopathic environmentalist cunts have to say.

We need them and they need us to live.

And the effects honey bees have on flowering plants is immense. The number of flowers you get explodes when honey bees are introduced.

The biggest winners are pasture flowering plants but of course many trees benefit as well.

What they didn't teach you in I hate humans cause I'm a cunt school is that solitary bee numbers are pathetic to the point of useless.

Even bumble bees while extremely good pollinators number from one bee to no more than 300.

Whereas honey bees reach 50000 per hive.

Now sit down and stop preaching hate

I used the closest bee dealer to my house and italian bees were ready, and aren't very agressive.

Try an old queen after a swarm during the dirth.

Nasty. Pinch that bitch

[–] [deleted] 4 pts

Nice! I now have 3 hives out there, split one last week because the swarm I caught late season last year swarmed so I needed to do something with the queen cells. Hopefully all three have queens, will inspect next week but they are all active.

You got scammed, I can only see 9999 bees. Better ask for a refund ASAP.

[–] 1 pt

Actually there was other bees clinging to the shipping cage, we may have more.

Watch out - we lost our entire hive thanks to a varroa mite infection that came in from some gear we bought from a big apiary supplier.

Edit: spelling

I think my chickens and guineas take care of most of the mites.

[–] 2 pts

wtf. no.

please do research. varroa mites are the most common pest affecting honeybees. if you have honeybees, you have varroa mites too. it's just a matter of controlling their numbers with testing and treating if necessary, but if you just don't do anything you won't have bees for very long.

Thanks for the warning.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

That's what we hoped, too <sigh>

Our hive was in our chicken run, and looked real healthy on the run in to winter... The only thing that was different to them being very healthy in the summer was the addition of a syrup feeder we bought to help them over the winter.

Thanks for sharing. Sorry you lost your bees.

Treat six monthly or your hives will die.

Non negotiable

I didn't know nigger bees were a thing... italians... fucking disgusting

[–] 1 pt

I tried to get German bees but it was like a 2 year wait.

[–] 1 pt

Any difference in taste?

[–] 1 pt

It depends on what your bees are eating.

[–] 0 pt

Ok, the joke replies are worthy, but seriously what led you to Italian bees? Was it just availability?

[–] 0 pt

Availability, plus they came out of Little Rock with was close by. Farmers will rent my hives no matter the bees.
