I'm hoping that I'll have time to share what I learn about farming - or to answer any questions about farming.

I don't know everything, but I know a bit. From trees to blueberries to baby bacons!

Disclosure: I just took ownership of a farm - those who've been following along in email and on the other site know what I speak of. I don't yet know that much about generic farming, but I've been helping out there for a decade and will learn more as I go.

No, it won't eat that much time - I probably won't be doing much more work there than I already do. That's what employees are for.

We are technically seeking one more laborer, if anyone is in the region and seeking employment. If you are and you're interested in learning (or better still, are experienced) then my email is uninvolved@outlook.com. You won't be interviewing with me - we have a foreman for that.

I am all on board for this. I am almost about to buy land and start trying to live more off the land. I have enough to buy the land cash and then start the process of building slowly. Its gonna be fun on a bun.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited. I'm really, really excited.

I'm also getting kind of drunk. Neighbors and friends keep stopping by and I keep toasting to owning a farm. I don't usually get drunk, but I am today!

Well enjoy! Wish me luck as I wish you luck. Who knows how we will look back on our selves in a year.

Good luck! It's dreadfully costly if you want a giant chunk of land. I'm not willing to discuss the price in a public forum, but you can probably see my email address and I'll happily disclose more information in private.

Other than that, I'm pretty frickin' excited.

Awesome, yeah it's be great to just assume we have either 1) zero knowledge or 2) erroneous popular knowledge re: actual farming and start from there.

I will have to see what I can come up with.

For example, inventorying and bookkeeping for farms is actually much more difficult than I'd expected. We needed to bring in a specialist company that does inventory for agriculture and my regular accountant refuses to do the books because CPA's sign off on things and assume a modicum of legal liability. She won't do that for a farm.

There's all sorts of strange things like that, things that I'd have never thought of before this process. I didn't go with any financing options. I liquidated some assets and paid for it directly - but I know that getting a mortgage would have been problematic - for many folks. I have pretty solid credit and a goodly amount of assets, so I can get credit if I want it.

I also don't much care if I'm doxxed. So, I can speak pretty openly and not worry about it. In my case, I sold my company and retired a decade ago - except I suck at being retired.

Right now, those are the two most interesting things - accounting and inventory. They took like four months to be completed.

Also maybe if you have any experience with the USDA incentives/financing?

The only process I'm familiar with is organic certification. They do send inspectors to the farm, but it's not a large processing station or anything. Technically, my only familiarity is with getting blueberries certified organic. About 30 acres per year go to organic berries.

That's pretty easy, just don't spray them.
