I brew on occasion!
I really keep meaning to get into it.
I bought a middle-of-the-road (expense-wise) beer brewing kit. It's got the giant glass carboy and all that jazz - including a bunch of stuff to get started with it.
It's in the basement and it collects dust. It was a number of boxes of stuff and I bought it from a fairly local place that sells brewing supplies.
It has brewed exactly zero beers. I put it in the basement, and it has not yet produced beer!
Got any motivation for me to actually (finally) dig it out and start trying to learn to brew beer? I keep telling myself that I'll get to it next winter, and that winter passes without me doing anything about it.
Winter is coming and I have lots of projects that I take up in the winter. I haven't lied to myself - yet. I haven't told myself that I'll get to it this winter.
I think I've had the kit since 2012 - and it's mostly still in unopened boxes.
So... Got any motivational speeches or can you think of any way to make it seem like something other than work for less than spectacular results - and at additional expense compared to what I can get from a major brewery or a local microbrewery?
My current thinking is that I'll probably be given free beer if I just give the kit away to a buddy! At the same time, beer making seems like it'd be an interesting project. I just can't seem to talk myself into actually doing the work and learning about it.
I'm a damned mess and you seem to know what you're talking about! Help me! LOL
DO YOU LIKE WASHING DISHES? THEN YOURE GONNA LOOOOOOOVE BREWING BEER!!!
seriously, I fucking HATE how much cleaning is involved. The brewing process is very fun, and even for an all-grain brew day, with me brewing alone, it takes me about 4 hours.
Ppl are gonna say start with extract, not all-grain. I disagree. Look up "biab" which is brew-in-a-bag.
Its the method I use, and you don't need like 3 coolers , mash tun, etc etc. a MUCH easier method than traditional all-grain brewing.
You know that pride you get when eating an animal you've killed and processed yourself? Yeah its like that when you brew your own shit :)
Dooooooooo it.
Duly noted!
just buy a kit from Northern Brewer, a simple one like a wheat or a red or pale ale, and brew a batch
then if it sucks all the equipment is still in the same condition, and give it away
That sounds reasonable. I can get the ingredient kits (and I think it came with one or two, but I'm not sure if they're still good - as I've had it in my basement for six years) at the local brewery supply store. Home brewing is not what I'd call 'big' here, but there's enough of it to support at least one store in Farmington, about an hour away.
I can follow simple directions - but I will probably end up wanting to know more about the chemical process and the actual physics involved. Which seems like a lot of work for what I expect to be shitty beer.
What made you want to brew beer? You said 'on occasion.' How frequently do you brew beer? It doesn't appear to be too much work, but does the result make the effort seem worthwhile?
Sort of sorry for all the questions, but beer brewing just seems like something I should know how to do - and don't.
