If she started out at Notre Dames des Neiges and finished at Westmount High it's because she couldn't speak a lick of French. Montreal in the 70s and 80s was almost 40% English speaking and Westmount High is an English high school no different than any found in rich parts of Ontario.

Not defending her but I know lots of guys who grew up in Quebec who understand the language but won't speak it. I read on-line someplace how you can understand a language but not be able to speak it but I forget the details now, but it's a real thing.
