On May 13, 2021, Shaun Seaman was beaten to death. Shaun had been sharing a jail cell with John Smith and others; while Shaun was sleeping, John attacked another cellmate and then approached Shaun and stomped on his head several times. John covered the damage with a blanket and then repeated his assault. Hours later, guards noticed that Shaun was no longer simply sleeping, but lying in a pool of blood. He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries. According to Shaun's family, he was developmentally challenged and had been detained after defending himself in a physical altercation with his girlfriend. Meanwhile, John was in custody for putting his pregnant wife in a chokehold and knocking her to the ground. He was also suspected in the murder of his cousin, after the cousin prevented John from engaging in a sexual relationship with one of his children.
