On April 27, 2020, Angela Johnson Summers was killed by a customer. Tony Cushingberry-Mays had his postal service suspended after several problems with an aggressive dog in his yard. Because of this, Angela had no mail for him as she completed her route that day. According to one of Angela's colleagues, Tony was upset at not receiving his government stimulus check and angrily confronted Angela. "My understanding is that she tried to explain that the mail could be picked up at another location and an argument ensued. I heard she was called horrible, horrible names." Angela defended herself with pepper spray, so Tony pulled out a handgun and shot the 45-year-old. Tony later told investigators that he knew the pepper spray was "not deadly, but led to discomfort from his asthma... He stated he did not mean to kill the letter carrier, but wanted to scare her." Angela left behind a teenage daughter.
