On April 12, 2021, Ahren Joshua DeHart was fatally injured by his babysitter. Ahren's usual sitter was unavailable that day, so the 13-month-old's parents had left him with Marvin Lake, who was a friend of the family. By the time Ahren's parents next saw him, he was unresponsive and breathing irregularly; he was rushed to the hospital. During police questioning, Marvin said he had performed some "wrestling-style moves" on the toddler, dropped him on his head, and also squeezed his head in anger after Ahren had ripped a pillow. The boy was found to have lung hemorrhaging and other abdominal injuries, along with multiple skull fractures which he did not survive.
