On March 17, 2021, Concetta Tuori was found murdered in her apartment. Victoria Afet had followed Connie home one day and attacked her, stuffing objects down the 93-year-old's throat and stabbing her repeatedly. A prosecuting attorney said that Connie died slowly, and described the killing as a "torture murder." Afterwards, Victoria left the body in a bedroom and lived in Connie's apartment for about three weeks, before one of Connie's friends noticed her disappearance. Some of Connie's relatives place "significant moral responsibility" for her death on a judge who had let Victoria loose a few days earlier. Victoria had been arrested for forcibly robbing and biting a 74-year-old woman in Connie's building. Judge Felicia Davis – who had once promised to combat "systemic racism in the justice system" by not "insisting that justice should be blind" to race – had released Victoria without bail, despite the fact that she had been arrested about ten times in the preceding year.
