On March 13, 2020, James O'Connor was killed on the job. Jim and a group of other police officers had been attempting to arrest Hassan Elliot on a murder warrant when Hassan, Khalif Sears, and other young men opened fire on the officers, striking Jim in the arm and shoulder. Jim left behind his wife of 25 years, a son, and a daughter. Jim's son, already with a daughter of his own, had also been a police officer. But after his father's death, he transitioned away from "street" work and into a training position for his mother's sake.
