On March 3, 2011, Clinton Roderick Dobson was killed in his office. Steven Nelson, along with one or two accomplices, came to the church where Clint was a pastor. He tied Clint up with an extension cord, struck him in the head, then suffocated the 28-year-old with a trash bag. Steven also beat Clint's elderly secretary before stealing her car along with credit cards and other valuables from her and Clint. She was so severely injured that her husband didn't recognize her when he discovered the crime scene. "I saw a woman that looked like had been beaten, lying there... The officer went over and roused her. I noticed the clothing and then I said, 'Oh my God. That's my wife.'"

Clint's secretary was hospitalized for weeks. Meanwhile, Steven used Clint's credit cards to go on a shopping spree. According to witnesses, when he and some friends saw a news report about the attack on television, Steven "began laughing and making inappropriate comments about Dobson's death."
