On February 28, 2001, Kristopher Randal Kime was walking with some friends when they found themselves in the midst of a riot. Kris noticed a young woman on the ground who had been attacked, and bent down to help her. A teenager named Jerell Thomas hit Kris in the back of the head with a bottle, knocking him to the ground where he was kicked by other rioters. Kris's friends were able to carry him away from the scene, but the 20-year-old died of head injuries a few hours later. Jerell Thomas served 10 years in prison for the killing.
