On February 20, 2021, Veronica Marie Billiot was killed in a gun store. Veronica had come to pick up an order when Joshua Williams opened fire. He shot the 59-year-old first, then engaged in a gunfight with the staff. According to the sheriff, Joshua was "screaming down the hallway" and trying "to find more victims" when he was stopped with deadly force by store employees. Some of Joshua's family members were mystified by his sudden violence, but his aunt blamed "systemic racism." She wrote on social media, "He was a victim of many social ills that plague too many young Black men who were born and raised in poverty in one of the wealthiest nations in the world." Veronica left behind six grandchildren.
