On February 12, 1979, Linda Marie VanderVeen was kidnapped and murdered. Linda had been filling in as a crossing guard that day for another student, who was sick. Albert Lee dragged her from her post, which was in sight of the school, and sped away with her in the back seat of his car. He sexually molested the 11-year-old, strangled her to death, and dumped her body in a snowbank less than two miles from her home.
Linda's family never fully recovered from her loss. Her father died a few years later, and after her mother also passed away, Linda's brother died in his 40's. According to a friend, his little sister's death had left him "a tortured soul."
