On February 4, 2000, Ted Franklin Church was shot in a bar. Obie Weathers had walked in and "told the three black men present to remain calm because he only wanted to rob the white individuals. Weathers robbed the white patrons, then ordered a waitress at gun point to empty the cash register. While the waitress was carrying the till to Weathers, she stumbled and Weathers pointed his gun at her head." Ted tried to protect her from the teenager, but in the struggle the 63-year-old was fatally wounded.
According to the shooter, "the white guy grabbed me and started wrestling with me... and I just let loose with the gun about two or three times." To this day, Obie has captured the attention of activists, with some suggesting that he has been treated harshly due to his race, and others pleading for clemency based on his IQ.
Ted Church's military gravestone reads "BELOVED HUSBAND FATHER & GRANDPA." As a general rule, I only write about people for whom I can find a picture, but I think Ted deserves an exception.
