On January 29, 2018, Matthew Grant was killed by his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend. Carl Bellamy had asked to speak with the young woman, and once they got together, he demanded to know where her new boyfriend was. When she refused to tell him, Carl took her phone and called Matthew. After a heated conversation, the woman tried to warn Matthew away, but he came to them. There was a brief exchange of words and Carl shot Matthew, then shot him again as he lay on the ground.
