On January 26, 2000, Geraldine Iris Davidson was drowned in a river. Danielle Simpson and his 16-year-old wife Jennifer Simpson lived near Geraldine, and had burglarized her house more than once before. But when she unexpectedly returned home to find Danielle, Jennifer, and his 13-year-old cousin there, they kidnapped her. They tied up the 84-year-old and put her in the trunk of her own car. They drove around town, showing their victim to friends, including Danielle's 15-year-old brother Lionel Simpson. Lionel said they should kill her, so the four youths had lunch and then drove to a local river, beat Geraldine, tied her legs to a cinder block, and threw her in the water, where she was found the next day. Danielle had burglarized other homes in addition to Geraldine's; inside one of them, he had spray-painted "white people should die" on a wall. And according to Jennifer, as Lionel beat the elderly widow and great-grandmother, he said "I never liked white people anyway."
