On December 31, 2013, John Kohler along with his son David Carpenter-Kohler and stepdaughter Ashley Carpenter were killed in their home. Eric Hendon and his brother Michael Hendon broke into the house and forced John to open a safe. Once that was done, they shot John, 14-year-old David, and 18-year-old Ashley each in the head.
