On December 25, 2016, Tricia Lynn McCauley went missing. Adrian Johnson kidnapped Tricia on her way to Christmas dinner, raped her, beat her, and strangled her to death. Two days later, Duane was found using her credit cards and car; he had been driving around with Tricia's naked body tied up in the back seat. Although he ultimately admitted to the attack, Duane originally claimed that Tricia had consensual sex with him and then deliberately strangled herself with a seat belt. He asked the police, "If someone is suicidal and gives you all their stuff, is that illegal?"
