On December 5, 2019, Richard Cutshaw was killed during a shootout on his way home from work. Lamar Alexander and Ronnie Hill had robbed a jewelry store and then hijacked a UPS truck. With the driver as a hostage, Lamar and Ronnie led the police on a freeway chase, which ended when heavy traffic forced the truck to stop. At this point, the robbers engaged in a gunfight with 19 officers, who took cover behind civilian vehicles as they riddled the UPS truck with bullets, killing both the robbers and the driver. Richard, who was preparing for retirement and happened to be in one of the nearby cars stuck in traffic, was hit by a stray shot.
