On December 2, 2017, Jared Fier-Plesec was killed by a stranger. Jared was leaving his apartment complex with a Bible in his hand, on his way to collect donations for the Salvation Army, when William Jones walked up to the 21-year-old and shot him in the head. A camera at the scene recorded William screaming "A life for a life!" and "I did it for y'all!" and "LeBron said unite!" During his sentencing, William gave a more calm and lengthy statement, repeatedly mentioning Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, and other supposedly unjust deaths. "Blacks being oppressed, living in fear... Sympathetic apology to the family. What about our people, our victims?... It just seems, when a white life takes a black life, it's justified. Today you seek justice. I can't help but wonder, if the shoe was on the other foot, would it be justified instead?... I wonder, do black lives really matter?"
