On November 28, 1994, Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was beaten to death in prison.
I remember the day the news got out, that another inmate named Christopher Scarver had killed Jeffrey. I was a teenager at the time. There was much celebration. What I never knew until recently, because a friend pointed it out to me, is the reason Christopher Scarver was in prison to begin with. Four years earlier, he had killed a White man named Steve Lohman. He shot Steve in the head during a sort of armed robbery.
You see, this is one of those glimpses I mentioned yesterday. Would any of us know about Steve Lohman, if his killer hadn't gone on to become famous for other reasons? Very unlikely. And there are tens of thousands of others, forgotten now because their African killers didn't end up doing anything really noteworthy later.
