On November 24, 2009, Thomas Ray Cunningham was taking an evening walk with his daughter. According to her mother, "she was really close to her dad, and he loved to take her all kinds of places. They'd go fishing, to Raiders games, to the park with the dogs." Thomas and the 13-year-old girl had just gotten ice cream and were on their way home when one of their dogs sniffed at a stranger in passing. Angered, the young man started arguing with Thomas, then pulled out a gun and shot him to death. Police released a sketch and eventually Dereak Turner was arrested for the killing.
