On November 14, 2018, Patrick Wayne Smith was fatally shot. An elderly neighbor asked Patrick to check her back yard because there were reports of burglars in the area. When he did, he encountered a group of five teenagers, including Leslie Hawkins, who shot Patrick eight times. Patrick suffered a broken thumb, wrist, and jaw, as well as injuries to his tongue, teeth, and lungs. He died in the hospital a few days later on Thanksgiving, leaving behind his wife and 5-year-old son.
