On November 12, 2019, Roger Payne was killed by a teenage neighbor. Cameryn Dickerson had been observing Roger's home for a few days before he came over with a sawed-off shotgun. He disabled the phones and forced Roger and his wife to walk out behind their house, where he shot the 82-year-old man in the face. Next, Cameryn shot Roger's wife in the throat, but she survived by putting up her hands to block part of the blast and then playing dead. After the shooting, Roger's wife walked half a mile to a friend's house, where she called for help. Cameryn took money from the couple's home and drove away in their car; he was apprehended on the way to bring gifts to his girlfriend.
